Pathways to Jannah

I am still having withdrawal symptoms from spending a whole week following the US presidential election on CNN. I may or may not have had recurring dreams about the states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida. I’m pretty sure John King is still sleeping off the stress of pressing that magic wall and reeling off numbers and projections.

During that agonising never-ending election coverage, there was constant talk about the candidates’ “pathway to the presidency”. The news anchors talked about the amount of states and electoral votes that they needed to win.

Well, as you can probably imagine, this got me thinking about some other pathway into something infinitely better than the American White House – The Gardens of Paradise.

And while only a handful of humans will ever have the opportunity to occupy the White House, the gardens of Jannah are there for the taking for you and me. And we don’t have to shamelessly court the black vote or the Latino vote or the suburban woman’s vote 🙄, hold super-spreader rallies and have nervous breakdowns on Twitter to make Jannah! Instead, we have been given multiple dignified pathways into the gardens of bliss. Here are some of them as narrated in the authentic books of Hadith

  1. Visiting a sick person – “Whoever visits an ailing person or a brother of his, to seek the pleasure of Allah, an announcer (from the angels) will call out: ‘may you be happy, may you be blessed and may you be awarded a dignified position in Jannah. (Tirmidhi)
  2. Spreading the Salaam, Feeding the hungry and Praying while people are asleep – “Oh People, spread salam, feed the hungry and pray while others are asleep and you will enter Jannah in peace. (Ibn Majah)
  3. Guarding the tongue and the private parts – “Whoever can guarantee the chastity of what is between his two jaw bones and his legs, I guarantee paradise for him” (Bukahri)
  4. Looking after 3 (or less) Daughters – Jabir ibn Abdllah reported that the prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) said: Whoever has three daughters and he accommodates them, shows kindness toward them and supports them, Paradise is definitely guaranteed for him” Someone asked the prophet, “what if they are only two daughters”? He replied “{he gets that reward} even if they are only two”
  5. Being Honest – The Rasul (sallalahu alayhi wa salaam) said: :I guarantee a house in the middle of Paradise for a person who avoids lying even if he was joking” (Abu Dawud)
  6. Sponsoring an Orphan – The Messenger (sallalahu alayhi wa salaam) said “I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like these two”- and he gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them apart. (Bukhari)
  7. Seeking Islamic Knowledge – “He who travels the path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise” (Muslim)
  8. Avoiding Arguments – “ I guarantee a house in the vicinity of Jannah for a person who avoids arguing even when he knows he is in the right” (Abu Dawud)
  9. Building a Masjid – “Whoever builds a Masjid in which the name of Allah is mentioned, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.
  10. Reciting Ayat al Kursi after every Fard salah – Abu Umamah reported that the prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa salaam) said “Whoever recites the verse of the Throne (ayatalKursiyy) after every obligatory prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entering Paradise except death” (An Nasaa’i)
