Loving on the skin I’m in

I don’t really make conscious or intentional ‘New Year Resolutions’. But, having spent the past 3 months in 2020, I realise that the accidental theme for this year is “Same, but different”. I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying:

“ Doing the same thing, in the same way, over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of Insanity”

I guess 2020 is the year I finally get tired of being a crazy bag lady!

When It comes to my skin; I lived by one simple rule: “Your skin is oily and you are prone to acne, therefore; wash it till it squeaks”

And so I did. With strong gel cleansers, hard bristly brushes and the strongest toners money could buy; because after all,  if it ain’t stingin’ it ain’t workin’ (I am wincing in pain right now just thinking about the trauma I put my skin through

I had heard of oils in the past but I just always dismissed them because my job in life was to deprive my skin of oil, not bless it with more oil! But, my ‘oil deprivation’ wasn’t working and I was getting really down and desperate for some changes. In fact, not only was it not working, it was getting progressively worse. I would get 3-4 massive cystic acne on my cheeks and chin every single month that left even bigger scars and spots on my face. I took some pretty drastic measures and bought from every trending brand in the world, (I’m looking at you ‘The Ordinary’). They were all epic fails that just ended up in the bin.

So, in the spirit of going against the status quo, I had this crazy idea where I would not wear a drop of makeup/foundation for two weeks and streamline my facial routine to just 3 items.

  1. A gentle foaming cleanser
  2. Rosehip Oil
  3. Hydrating moisturising cream

And just like that, for two months, I was acne free! I couldn’t believe my eyes! Me? No monthly guest on my face? Unbelievable

My skin still has a lot of healing to do but we are on the right track. So if you are suffering from acne and have oily skin, these are the things you need to know:

  • DO NOT DEPRIVE YOUR SKIN OF OILS
  • BE GENTLE WITH IT
  • DO NOT WEAR FOUNDATION!! (Can’t stress this one enough)

If you don’t know where to begin, have a look at my recommendations below for tried and trusted options for how to look after acne-prone oily skin.

These three simple steps were all I needed to turn my skin around in 30 days and I would recommend them. They are not the cheapest on the market, but, they last a long time ( each product lasts me at least 3 months) and are guaranteed to do the job.

I do have some other oils that I am trialling at the moment and so far I have no complaints. It’s only been three weeks so I can’t give any objective review just yet. But, here they are if you would like to try them too. Be warned, they are on the very high end of the price scale!

  1. Sunday Riley CEO Oil
  2. Sunday Riley UFO Oil
This is a combination of what I use when I want to really treat my skin occasionally. On a daily basis, I do the three simple steps during the day and one extra step at bedtime.
