This is the latest menace in our household. The 3-year-old has been taught the good ol’ virtue of sharing and now I’m wishing I didn’t. Ok, maybe not. But seriously, because we’ve encouraged him to share his toys with his sister and friends, he thinks everyone else must share with him, bless him. He goes around proclaiming “it’s good to share” to anyone who has a toy or something that he would like to have. He feels like a great injustice has been done to him whenever I say to him for instance, “Yes, it is nice to share, but Connor* doesn’t HAVE to share with you”. He looks up at me, shakes his head in confusion and then burst into tears. In those few moments, I can see the little wheels turning in his head trying to make sense of what I just told him. I feel like a hypocrite.
How can I help him understand that he doesn’t have a right to everything and anything just because he has asked nicely and admonished the other party to share? 🙂 I suppose as he grows older he will understand the complexities of human life. Help? anyone?
