Favourites: Autumn/Winter 2014

These are some of the things I’ve purchased, used and loved  in the last five months. I highly recommend.

1: Tesco Hudl 2 Android Tablet : We purchased this for our son in November 2014 and I’ve been impressed with it ever since. I have always been a bit skeptical about the amount of time children spend on  electronic devices but this tablet offers a time restriction and app restriction function.  The tablet doesn’t work before or after the time you’ve set it to and the restricted apps just won’t function at all. It has HD display, and a wealth of beneficial apps are available to download from the Android Play Store. There’s a lot more to love about this tablet but as you can probably tell, I don’t do tech lingo well. So, have a look here for more info.

2: Kenwood ‘Smoothie2go’ Smoothie maker:  I know there are loads of much-hyped brands of smoothie-makers and juicers out there but if you are on a budget and you want something that works a treat, then this has your name all over it. I LOVE this nifty gadget so much and it has been helping me get back on the healthy-eating train. It also works well for pureeing fruits and veggies for your little one when you start weaning.  If this sounds like your deal, then have a look here. You won’t regret it.

3: Toddler Backpack Harness: Now I understand that child harnesses are like Marmite: you either hate it or you love it. Well, obviously I love it. I used to feel some type of way about it before but having a hyperactive toddler that runs off at will made me change my position quickly. I’d rather have him well restrained than deal with a broken bone. So, if you are in the same boat, these back-pack styled ones do the job without making your child look like a dog on a leash. Although, I’m sure folks back home in Nigeria will tut and shake their heads in disgust at this. I don’t care.

4. Eucerin Intensive Care Lotion: Moving to a colder and drier climate has had a huge impact on my skin and I am sad to report that I now suffer from excessive dryness and mild Dermatitis. Even sadder is that my babies have got the same problem. The hard water in England isn’t helping either. I find that this is quite common among Black and Asian communities but Caucasians suffer from eczema as well. I have tried EVERY eczema-targeted brand of moisturiser, none of them works as well as this. A few cons but the pro (which is that it works) outweighs them all. It is very thick and can feel quite cloying especially in the summer, but it works an absolute treat. Dermatitis, if not handled properly and swiftly, can really damage the skin. This lotion helps nip it in the bud quickly. I am addicted.

5. Lancome Tonique Eclat: This is an exfoliating toner that works wonders. It has a fair amount of alcohol and a bit of fragrance in it so if you are sensitive to these ingredients then this is not for you. However, if you have hyperactive sebaceous glands on your face (i.e oily skin) like I do, get yourself this liquid gold. You will be glad you did. It leaves your face feeling clean and fresh without leaving it dry and taut. Over time, with constant use, your skin becomes softer and more radiant. It is a bit on the pricey side, but it is an investment worth every penny, in my opinion.

6. One4Islam children apps: These apps are fantastic for young Muslim children. They are well made, full of useful and positive Islamic teachings for the growing mind. The company that produced them are based in Australia and they have a ton of products on the market: DVDs, apps on android and iOS platforms, Youtube videos e.t.c. Check out their website here, I highly recommend them to any young Muslim family.
